*I hope people use their own wise judgement when hiking always plan ahead and be prepared. One should never go beyond their abilities.*

Over the years I've had a few goals my first was to Summit all the Peaks of Waterton. Here is My Waterton Summit List I completed that goal on September 26, 2016.

My next goal I'm still working on and that is to summit the 6 10,000 foot Summmits of Glacier National Park. I have one left Kintla.

My 2018 Goal that I accomplished was to summit 40 peaks in my 40th year and that I finished on September 26, 2018.

Not sure what will be my next goal, once Glacier's Summits are done?

I commonly use 3 Hashtags on my social media. The first one is #itookthepathlesstraveledby which is to reference this blog. The next two relate to my father and grandfather who were also hikers. #milesformarkellingson is to remember my
Dad, Mark Ellingson and #dustfromthetrailandhowitsettledonme is to remember my Grandfather Earl Ellingson

Eiffel Peak August 27, 2020 Banff National Park, Alberta

So our family holiday this week took us to beautiful Banff national park.  We camped for 6 nights there.  The day we did Eiffel Peak we got up at 4am and drove to Moraine Lake and arrived at the parking lot at about 5:45am and there was only about 5 spots left.  We then had a nap in the vehicle and I took a few sunrise shots before we started hiking.  Carter and I did Eiffel Peak while the rest of the family went on to Sentinel Pass.  It was a beautiful day, with like no wind at the top of the mountain.  We only saw 6 other people on the Eiffel trail which is pretty good, cause when we did Temple 2 years ago the train of people was probably the most I'd ever seen on a mountain.  Once down we took our canoe out for a paddle on Moraine Lake.  By bringing our canoe we saved $200.00 an hour.  To rent it costs $100 per hour for 3 people...crazy.

3 Summit (Mount Lineham, Lone Mountain, Mount Bauerman) Backpacking trip August 20-22, 2020 Lone Lake Waterton Lakes National Park

So my son needs 6 more summits to have completed all the Waterton Summits, so this trip was planned with that in mind.  We booked 2 nights at Lone Lake Campground and had for an objective to tackle all three of Mt. Lineham, Lone Mountain, and Mt. Bauerman.  We also convinced another family to come along so we could have the entire lake to ourselves, so it was two families chilling at the lake and it was awesome.  The first day we hiked in and arrived at the lake by mid afternoon and just relaxed.  I think my pack was about 50lbs. and hiking all day long (almost 15km) in the heat with no shade from the Kenow fire was pretty tough.  But the next day we got up and headed over to Mt. Lineham, and boy was it hot and exposed to the sun.  Water was scarce along the trail and so we had to conserve which for a guy like me sweating isn't easy.  Once we got back we re-hydrated and then tackled Lone Mountain that night with a bunch of the kids for a sunset hike.  It was a pretty view, and on the way down I got thinking that we are probably the only people ever to summit both Lineham and Lone is the same day because why else would you do those two mountains on the same day?  The reason being is usually Lineham is accessed via Cameron Lake road but since it is closed we had to go this much harder way.  The next morning on our way out we dropped our packs at one point and then zipped up Bauerman to finish off the 3 summits.  The two previous days the visibility was poor because of the forest fires in B.C. but the wind picked up the last day and we had great views from Bauerman.  We then came down and hiked out.  3 days, 3 peaks, and lots of tired people.

Smiles at the beginning...relief to be done 3 days later (no photo taken of that moment)

The caterpillars were everywhere and disgusting

Hiking in the burn

This bridge survived the fire although it did get pretty chared

Towards Lone lake the burn ended and the area around the lake is still nice and green and burn free

Dirty feet after hiking through 15 km of soot

Great little campsite at Lone, this is the third time I've camped here and will go back for more

Newly installed bear proof foot containers much handier than the bear poles

One of our tents on one of the 4 tent pads

Sun rising on the 2nd day

Gorgeous still morning on the lake.  I think the wind is blocked here because on the 2nd night we could hear the wind but it wasn't affecting our tents at all.

Big herd of Rams on the trail up to Lineham Ridge

Lineham Lakes one of the prettiest areas of the park that was saved from the fire

Another view of Lineham Lakes and falls from Mt. Lineham

It was pretty dry in the valley we hiked in that day but a few weeks ago before it got hot it must have been so pretty with all the withered flowers we saw

Sunset from Lone Mountain

Could see Castle and Windsor quite well in the distance

Sunset with a view to the left into the Flathead Valley

Cairn on Lone with the sunset behind

Milky way shot at the lake that night

Fire ban, when we were climbing Lineham the helicopter came and closed down our fire pit.  Luckily we got one day of fire before they shut us down.

Heading up Bauerman looking towards Avion Ridge and Glendowan, you can see the burned and non burned area from the Kenow fire

Looking over to Kootenai Brown, Lost and Anderson

Looking over to Lone and some of the Glacier Peaks in the background

Twin Lakes another area sparred from the Kenow fire

Carbondale Hill Fire Lookout August 18, 2020 Castle Provincial Park

We had been camping at Castle Falls Campground for a few days and decided to do a sunset hike and Carbondale hill wasn't far away and wasn't that difficult.  So we headed up and got a beautiful sunset from the top.  This fire lookout is still active and we said hi to the lady who was up there.  I got a great view of the mountains to the west especially Darrah.  I will say I think I prefer the sky on the sunrise over the sunset.

Our crew on the way up
