*I hope people use their own wise judgement when hiking always plan ahead and be prepared. One should never go beyond their abilities.*

Over the years I've had a few goals my first was to Summit all the Peaks of Waterton. Here is My Waterton Summit List I completed that goal on September 26, 2016.

My next goal I'm still working on and that is to summit the 6 10,000 foot Summmits of Glacier National Park. I have one left Kintla.

My 2018 Goal that I accomplished was to summit 40 peaks in my 40th year and that I finished on September 26, 2018.

Not sure what will be my next goal, once Glacier's Summits are done?

I commonly use 3 Hashtags on my social media. The first one is #itookthepathlesstraveledby which is to reference this blog. The next two relate to my father and grandfather who were also hikers. #milesformarkellingson is to remember my
Dad, Mark Ellingson and #dustfromthetrailandhowitsettledonme is to remember my Grandfather Earl Ellingson

Calanque d'en Vau France April 10, 2015

We had a holiday this year to France and along the way we decided to go hike the Calanque's which are these amazing gorges south of Marseille.  They are mostly only accessible by either boat or foot and we chose to go by foot.  The day was hot, but it was very rewarding to look down on the pristine water and see it glistening.  My two oldest kids loved it and it was a change of scenery from all the castles and cathedrals we had seen.  I must say I love castles and old buildings but there is something to be said about nature and its splendor.
We had hiked for a little bit and came to this but the better view was ahead.

Little beach we could have hiked down to, but we didn't have much time

These cliffs are pretty shear.
My wife didn't want to get to close to the edge

Pictures don't do justice.

It was amazing how clear the water was

The rock here was pretty neat, but very hot as there was little shade

Jewel Basin in Montana July 24, 2015

We had a family vacation in the Kalispell area and since there were forest fires in Glacier Park we decided to do a little hike as a family.  We had to drive up this little gravel road for quite some time to reach the trail head, it was a short hike but a nice view of the Flathead Valley above Echo Lake.

Mount Cleveland July 1-3, 2015

I have been wanting to summit this mountain for many years, at least since high school my group of friends had seen this mountain off on the horizon and had dreamt of summiting this beast ever since.  In 2001 a friend and I had attempted this peak but were unsuccessful as we got lost in the Alder bushes on the west slopes.  This year I had planned on doing it with my brother and my son and so after a great July first parade in our home town of Raymond, we headed to Waterton and obtained the necessary permits and took the 2nd last international boat for the day as to arrive so we could clear customs at Goat Haunt.  Once we cleared that we hiked to the un-designated camping site we had reserved in the west bowl of Mt. Cleveland.  I have since read a few peoples experiences of this approach and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to navigate through the endless dead fall and alder bushes.  For three hours straight we bushed through the worst bushing I have ever experienced...bar none!  We finally made it to where we would camp for the night and set up our tent and tried to sleep...it wasn't very comfy sleeping on an incline and being exhausted from the bush waking.  We got up the next morning and hiked from 9:00 am and didn't return to the Goat Haunt boat launch till 11:00 pm that same day (we missed the boat that left at 8 pm and had to stay at the camp shelters at the boat launch).  It was a beautiful day for hiking and the summit was spectacular, it was just such a physically exhausting hike.  From Goat Haunt to the top is over 6000 feet elevation gain, much more than anything I had previously done.  It was still worth it even though my brother was a little upset that we missed the boat home and had to wait till morning to catch a ride back.  The other downside was since we had 3 hours of bush waking on day one we had just as much but maybe worse going downhill of the same 3 hours of bush waking.  I may not ever try this peak again simply because it was awful.  I have never ruined so much stuff hiking that that day.  I had huge holes ripped in my pants, socks and pack.  I still have a scar on my right shin that is still present 4 months later. All in all it was a great experience and hopefully you enjoy these photos.  We saw a grizzly and 2 cubs and once you reach this summit you truly have the perspective that you are on the highest peak around because you get that sense from the top.

Guartantua Cave Boy Scout Camp August 20, 2015

I'm a Boy Scouts of Canada Scout Leader on the side and a couple times a year I get the privilege of taking a group of boys out camping in nature.  This year we were fortunate enough to go and try out the Gargantua Caves in the Crows nest Pass of Alberta.  We camped on the Alberta side of the Gargantua cave trail for a few days and climbed up the B.C. side to get to the Gargantua Caves.  It was a beautiful day and one the boys will never forget.  This was my second time in the caves as I had gone with a small group in August of 2014.  This trip was just as fun but a little slower growing with our large group of mostly inexperienced mountaineering boys.  Pictures are hard to take in the caves but I tried my best to get some good shots of the adventure.  We got out a little late from the caves and actually had to descend back to our vehicles in the dark, good thing we had headlights!  We actually didn't get back to the base camp till about 1 o'clock in the morning after hiking since 9 or 10 am the previous day.
Heading up to the cave

Our group of 12 and 13 year old scouts (hazy day from forest fires)

Quaint little stream in a wooded area

The B.C. side of the caves that we came up is quite a barren treeless scramble

Inside the cave looking out

First rappel of the day (longest too, about 60 feet)

Another view of the first rappel

There were many tight squeezes along the way

Another spot we had to rappel down

Going into the famous "birth canal" this is just before you exit to the outside. We were probably in the cave for about 5 or 6 hours at this point and were ready to get out but you have to gear down and climb about 15 feet through this tiny little squeeze.  It is not for the claustrophobic.

Pictures never do justice but this is my hand in respect to the birth canal

I'm through waiting for my pack to get passed to me again I tried to give the size some perspective by showing my foot in the end of the birth canal

This is Brad climbing through the birth canal

After the birth canal yo have to climb on your hands and knees for about 60 feet through what I call the worm hole.

Our head lamp guided decent (sorry for the poor picture)
