*I hope people use their own wise judgement when hiking always plan ahead and be prepared. One should never go beyond their abilities.*

Over the years I've had a few goals my first was to Summit all the Peaks of Waterton. Here is My Waterton Summit List I completed that goal on September 26, 2016.

My next goal I'm still working on and that is to summit the 6 10,000 foot Summmits of Glacier National Park. I have one left Kintla.

My 2018 Goal that I accomplished was to summit 40 peaks in my 40th year and that I finished on September 26, 2018.

Not sure what will be my next goal, once Glacier's Summits are done?

I commonly use 3 Hashtags on my social media. The first one is #itookthepathlesstraveledby which is to reference this blog. The next two relate to my father and grandfather who were also hikers. #milesformarkellingson is to remember my
Dad, Mark Ellingson and #dustfromthetrailandhowitsettledonme is to remember my Grandfather Earl Ellingson

Clark/Kishinena/Festubert Peaks August 20, 2016

Well I wanted to knock off a bunch more peaks, so my usual hiking partner my son and I went off for another adventure.  We decided to try the biking to Snowshoe campground to save on some time.  I forgot how hard it was to bike that route and even harder after the Goat Lake turn off.  I had biked to Goat Lake turn off before but not past and it was very much up hill the entire way.  It did make for a fast return trip though.  So on Google maps I had noticed a ridge west of Avion ridge called Clark Range, so I figured I had to summit that since it was "named" on google, even though it isn't named on any other map I've seen.  Anyways none of these summits were too technical, the only tricky part was rejoining the Tamarack Trail from the top of Festurbert.  We had to climb slowly down that ridge and once we regained the trail it was smooth sailing home.  In total we covered 48 km today, of which 32 was hiking and 16 was biking.  It was the farthest I have ever gone in one day and I was feeling it that night.  The views were spectacular and the weather couldn't have been nicer.  Great day and great memories.

Spider web on the trail, proof we were the first in a while to take this trail

Heading up Clark Range with a shot looking out towards the Red Rock Rim Traverse

On top of Clark Range looking towards Anderson on left and Blakiston left of center

Looking down on Lost Lake from Clark Range

Looking north towards Castle Peak and barely visible on the left Crowsnest Mountain

On our way down Clark Range

View of our next two peaks on right is Kishinena and in the center is Festubert

Almost two months earlier we had attempted Kishinena Peak and we have a picture taken on this spot but we where standing in 6 inches of snow (late June)

This was as far as we had gone on that snowy day in June (we are glad we turned back that day because we would have never made it safely to the top)

Twin Lakes from the ridge above

We saw lots of horse tracks up on this ridge.  I couldn't believe people actually take their horses this far up.

Another shot of Twin Lakes and the Red Rock Valley

Carter on top of Kishinena, there were two high points we figured the true summit in where Carter is

Looking down the Blakiston Valley from Kishinena

Summit number two for the day

Some maps show this little false summit as the true summit so we had to go here as well, notice how much higher the true summit is behind Carter, so I think that the true summit is the higher point

Another view looking back at Kishinena and Clark Range in the distance

Looking south to our next goal for the day, Festubert

Summit number 3 for the day

View of the ridge we would descend to regain the Tamarack Trail

There were a few tricky parts but not too bad

Another shot of Carter coming down from Festubert

Black Bear we saw on the road leaving Red Rock Canyon

Another bear we saw just as we were leaving the park

Stoney Indian Pass/Cleveland Attempt August 16-18, 2016

This was a group back country camping trip we had planned for some time.  I swore I would never try Cleveland again because of the awful bush whacking but some friends told me of another route to the top so I figured we'd give it a try.  So we booked the camp sites through Glacier Parks back country camping service website.  Which by the way is awful and the Park needs to make that system better.  Anyways we got our desired sites - Stoney Indian Campsite the first night and Kootenai Lakes Campsite the 2nd night.  So we drove to Chief Mountain border crossing early on the 16th and started our 32 km hike from there to Stoney Indian Lake Campsite.  It was a long hard day carrying our huge packs that weighed around 35-40 lbs.  We started at about 7:30 am and got to the camp site at around 7:30 pm.  It was a long day and nice to sleep in our tents that night.  The next morning we got up and regained the Stoney Indian pass ridge and started up the south ridge of the Stoney Indian Mountains.  We got almost to where we would start traversing the ledges over to the crux in the ridge when my wife started to have a panic attack.  She had never really wanted to come on this hike but we were able to convince her it wouldn't be too bad.  However, in seeing her panicking we figured her and I would head down and go to the next camp site instead.  So we wished the others good luck on their hike and told them to be safe.  The rest of my day was pretty relaxing and easy.  We had a nice day at Kootenai Lakes.  Then at about 8pm it started to rain and we had quite the thunderstorm roll in.  The other group of 4 had still not shown up so we started to worry a little.  Then at about 11pm we started to get hailed on and it was crazy how hard it was coming down.  I'm surprised our tent survived the downpour.  Well morning rolled around and we put down our tent wet and headed to Goat Haunt to see if the rest of our party had made it to there instead of Kootenai Lakes because of the rain and hail.  Well they were not there and so we spend the morning worrying about them and then eventually at about 2pm on the 18th they rolled into Goat Haunt with quite the story to tell.  I guess they didn't summit till about 3pm on the 17th.  Which was way later than they should have and as a result got stuck in the storm as it rolled in and luckily found a cave on the mountain where they could seek shelter from the elements and stay the night.  They luckily had 3 emergency reflective bivy sacks and were able to stay warm enough...still cold, but warm enough to survive.  Then once morning came they headed down and we all took the International back to Waterton with an adventure to tell like none other!

Looking towards the Stoney Indian Peaks and ridge, this is the ridge we headed up the next day, the crux (low point) in the middle of the picture is where the other four would go to access the east side of the mountain and take it all the way to Cleveland

Looking down on Stoney Indian Lake from the Pass

Sunset on a gorgeous long day

Kootenai Lakes

Picture outside our tent while it was hailing

Hail still on the trail the next morning as we left Kootenai Lakes

I got this picture from facebook of the lightning storm that we were in.  I think I remember this very strike because it rattled and echoed all the way down the valley we were in.
